Meet the Staff

Renie Moss

Assistant Dean for Campus Life

Renie Moss joined the Samford University community in the summer of 2010. Renie previously served as Dean of Students at Birmingham-Southern College and worked as Director of Student Activities and Director of Greek Life at Centre College and Director of Student Activities at Wesleyan College (GA). She holds a B.S. degree in English from Vanderbilt University and M.A in Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. With over fifteen years of experience working in higher education, Renie enjoys providing opportunities for Samford students to grow in their faith, leadership, and service to the campus and community while providing a diverse array of campus programs and events that ensure a fun and memorable college experience. Renie is originally from right here in Homewood, AL.

Dr. Denny Bubrig

Denny Bubrig, an Oxford, MS, native, serves as the Director of Greek Life after joining the Samford family in November of 2010. He is a longtime veteran of higher education. He holds a B.A. in Political Science and Broadcast Journalism and an M.A. in Higher Education and College Student Personnel from the University of Mississippi. He also holds a Ph. D in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama. Previous professional posts include Associate Director of Residence Life and Director of Greek Affairs and Assistant Dean of Students at Bowling Green State University, Activities Coordinator at University of Alabama, and Coordinator of Student Activities and Greek Life at University of Tennessee-Martin, to name a few. As Director of Greek Life at Samford, Denny advises the three governing Greek Councils encompassing 15 active international/national Greek organizations housed at Samford University, supporting their efforts to promote the values of scholarship, leadership, and service through annual campus programming.

 
Nick Madsen

Nick Madsen

Nick Madsen joined the Samford University community in September of 2004 as Coordinator of Campus Recreation. In January 2006, he was named the Director of Campus Recreation. Originally from Algona, Iowa, he graduated from North Iowa Area Community College with his Associates degree and finished his Bachelor's degree in Recreational Management at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. He went on to complete his masters work in Sports Administration at University of Wisconsin La Crosse. Nick's responsibilities over Campus Recreation include managing indoor and outdoor athletic and recreational facilities, overseeing intramurals, facilitating outdoor activities, managing the fitness programs, advising the sport clubs, hiring, training, and evaluating around 100 student employees, marketing all programs/activities, developing hours of operations for facilities and working with Exercise Science & Sports Management, Athletics and Student Government Association for facility needs.

JW joined Samford in 2012 as intern to Campus Recreation and was promoted to Coordinator of Campus Recreation in 2013.   Originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee, JW is a graduated from East Tennessee State University (ETSU) with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management and worked in intramural sports and campus recreation programs.   As Coordinator of Campus Recreation at Samford,  JW manages the recreational facilities, the intramural sports program, facilitates outdoor recreational activities, and supervises student workers, training student officials and scheduling games for individuals and teams.   JW is pursuing a graduate degree in the field of Health Sciences and is a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee. 

Eric Hughes

Eric joined Samford in 2013 as intern to Campus Recreation. Originally from Commiskey, IN Eric will graduate from Indiana State University in December with a bachelor’s degree in recreation and sports management with a concentration in youth leadership. In his time at Indiana State Eric worked with intramurals, club sports, facilities, special events, and also with new student orientation. As and intern of Campus Recreation at Samford, Eric will help manage student staff in many different fields including intramural sports and in the fitness facilities while also performing office tasks to benefit the program.

Jalete Nelms

Office Assistant/Payroll Supervisor for Campus Recreation

Jalete Nelms joined the staff at Samford University in the Fall of 2011. Jalete previously served as a District Press Representative for the US House of Representatives, a Communications Manager with the JCCEO, and as a Communications Coordinator for Southern Progress Corporation. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and Speech from the University of Montevallo where she currently serves as Vice President of Awards on the UM Alumni Board. Jalete is currently pursuing a Master’s in Business Administration at Samford. Jalete maintains the day-to-day administrative duties in Campus Recreation which includes supervising payroll for 75 plus student workers. In the community Jalete is active with the Homewood City Schools Foundation, the Homewood High School Band, the Vestry at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and a volunteer with several sports teams in the Homewood and Birmingham School Systems. Jalete is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and resides in Homewood.

Beth Roller

Beth joined the Campus Life staff in June 2012 as Director of Student Activities and Events. In this role she oversees programs ranging from Connections and Step Sing to the Student Activities Council arm of SGA. Prior to working at Samford, Beth served as Graduate Assistant of Student Productions at Baylor University where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design and a Masters Degree in Higher Education-Student Affairs. As an undergraduate, Beth was active in various campus programming committees igniting her passion for student-led campus initiatives.

Paige Acker joined the Campus Life team at Samford University, as Coordinator of Student Activities and Events, in July of 2013. A native of Brookwood, Alabama she received her M.S. in Higher Education from Florida State University in 2013, and is a graduate of The University of Alabama, where she earned a B.A. in Communication Sciences in 2010. Prior to working at Samford, Paige served as the Graduate Assistant for the FSU Oglesby Union and a graduate intern with the Dean of Students Office. Starting the next chapter of her career in Student Affairs, Paige is excited to work with a diverse and committed group of professionals to develop successful programs and services for students. She is passionate about student engagement and leadership, and looks to provide students with unique opportunities to impact both the campus and local community.

Janna Pennington

Janna joined the Campus Life Staff in August 2010 as Director of Student Leadership and Community Engagement. Prior to working at Samford, Janna served as Service-Learning Coordinator at Georgia Southern University, Housing Area Coordinator at Furman University, and Graduate Assistant in The University of Georgia’s Career Center. She received her B.A. in History from Furman and M. Ed. in Professional Counseling from The University of Georgia. Janna is originally from Statesboro, Georgia and she loves traveling and learning about different people and cultures. As an undergraduate student, Janna studied abroad in southern Africa and attended the International Summer School at the University of Oslo in Norway. Janna advises Samford's Student Government Association, coordinates the Leadership Lunch Series, and supervises the Community Engagement Coordinator position that provides students with civic and service engagement opportunities throughout the year.

Laura Valentine, a native of Nashville, Tennessee, joined the Campus Life staff in January 2013 and began her current role in June of 2013. In this position, Laura oversees Freshman Forum, Alternative Spring Break, the Student Liaison program, Samford Gives Back and other community engagement efforts and leadership initiatives. Laura received her Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama where she worked as a Graduate Assistant for Parent Programs and the Women’s Resource Center while interning with Student Involvement and Leadership, First-Year Experience and volunteering with Greek Affairs. Laura received her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from Virginia Tech where she was highly involved as a student, serving as an Orientation Leader, Vice President of Standards and President of her sorority. Laura has a passion for mentoring students and encouraging them to grow as campus and community leaders.

Kyle Bailey

International and Graduate Student Coordinator

Kyle joined the Campus Life Staff in September 2012 as International and Graduate Student Coordinator. Prior to working with Campus Life, Kyle served as the Missionary in Residence for University Ministries while pursuing his Master of Divinity degree from Beeson Divinity School. Kyle and his family came to Samford in 2009 after serving on staff with a community development ministry outside of San José, Costa Rica. Kyle has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Georgia and has worked for many years in both Christian ministry and the construction industry.  Kyle is a primary resource for the international student community throughout their time at Samford.

Janet joined the Campus Life staff in September of 2010, having been a part of the Samford community for 12 years with previous posts in Counseling Services and Disability Support Services. Janet is originally from Brownsville, TN and attended San Antonio College in Texas. She spent over eight years in the Air Force and also worked at Maryville College in Maryville, TN. She assists with the daily office responsibilities for Campus Life, Greek Life, Student Leadership and Programming and Community Service.
